This is the BEST Bread Pudding, a comforting, sweet, and custardy dessert made with leftover bread. With a perfect balance of cinnamon, eggs, and milk, it’s a warm, indulgent treat topped with an optional creamy vanilla or brown sugar sauce.
For the Bread Pudding:
6 slices stale bread (or about 4–5 cups of broken bread pieces or cubes such as French bread, buns, rolls, donuts, challah, or toast)
3 tablespoons butter (1 tablespoon + 2 tablespoons)
4 beaten eggs
2 cups milk
¾ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Raisins (optional)
Optional Sauces:
Creamy Vanilla Sauce: Use your favorite vanilla sauce recipe, or store-bought if preferred.
Brown Sugar Sauce:
3 tablespoons butter (salted or unsalted)
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish with 1 tablespoon butter.
Prepare the Bread: Tear or cut stale bread into pieces or cubes and place them in the prepared baking dish.
Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, white sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
Combine Bread and Custard: Pour custard mixture evenly over bread. Press gently to soak up the custard. Add raisins, if desired.
Add Butter: Dot the top with the remaining 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces.
Bake: Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until golden brown and custard has set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
Serve: Let cool slightly, then serve as is or with optional sauces.
Creamy Vanilla Sauce: Prepare or use store-bought vanilla sauce and serve warm over the bread pudding.
Brown Sugar Sauce: In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, stir in brown sugar, and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add vanilla extract and stir. Serve warm over the bread pudding.
Chocolate Bread Pudding: Add chocolate chips or chopped chocolate for a chocolatey twist.
Spiced Bread Pudding: Add nutmeg, allspice, or clove to the custard for extra spice.
Fruit Bread Pudding: Add chopped apples, pears, or berries for a fruity variation.
Nutty Bread Pudding: Add chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds for texture and flavor.
