Learn how to make homemade sushi rice with this easy and authentic recipe. With a perfect balance of sweetness, tanginess, and sticky texture, this sushi rice is the perfect base for your sushi rolls, poke bowls, and more. Simple ingredients like rice vinegar, honey, and salt create a flavorful rice that holds together beautifully, just like in your favorite sushi restaurant!
2 1/4 cups water
2 cups sushi rice, uncooked
1/4 cup rice vinegar
1/4 cup honey
1 tsp salt
Seasoning (optional, such as furikake or toasted sesame seeds)
Rinse the Rice: Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear, removing excess starch for the perfect sticky texture.
Cook the Rice: Combine the rinsed rice and 2 1/4 cups water in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
Rest the Rice: Remove from heat and let the rice sit, covered, for another 10 minutes to steam.
Prepare the Seasoning: In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, honey, and salt. Stir until dissolved.
Season the Rice: Once the rice has rested, transfer it to a large bowl. While still warm, gently fold in the vinegar mixture with a wooden spoon or rice paddle, being careful not to mash the rice. Let the rice cool to room temperature before using.
Add Optional Seasoning: For extra flavor, sprinkle with furikake, toasted sesame seeds, or another seasoning of choice.
Sweetener Alternatives: Use maple syrup, agave syrup, or sugar as alternatives to honey.
Vegan Version: Substitute honey with agave or maple syrup.
Flavor Boost: Add a bit of furikake or sesame seeds for added flavor and texture.
