A Smoked Salmon Sandwich combines creamy whipped cream cheese, fresh herbs, and the delightful smokiness of salmon, all wrapped in soft, flavorful bread. It’s a quick and sophisticated meal ideal for lunch, brunch, or a special treat.

Ingredients

4 slices rye bread or whole wheat bread

4 oz whipped cream cheese

1 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped

1 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped

1 tsp lemon zest

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

68 slices high-quality smoked salmon (about 4 oz)

½ small red onion, thinly sliced

1 cup baby arugula or watercress

Instructions

  1. Prepare the cream cheese spread: In a small bowl, combine the whipped cream cheese, fresh chives, fresh dill, and lemon zest. Season with salt and black pepper. Stir well.
  2. Toast the bread (optional): Lightly toast the rye or whole wheat bread until golden brown for extra crunch.
  3. Assemble the sandwich: Spread the herb-infused cream cheese mixture generously on each slice of bread.
  4. Layer the smoked salmon: Place 6-8 slices of smoked salmon on two slices of bread.
  5. Add the toppings: Layer thin slices of red onion and a handful of baby arugula or watercress on top of the salmon.
  6. Finish and serve: Place the remaining slices of bread on top, cream cheese side down. Cut in half and serve immediately.

Notes

Use gluten-free bread for a gluten-free version.

For extra creaminess, add slices of ripe avocado to the sandwich.

If you like a bit of crunch, try adding thin slices of cucumber.

Pickled onions can be used instead of fresh red onions for a tangy contrast.
