Ingredients

Saltine crackers (enough to cover the bottom of a baking sheet, about 30 crackers)

1 cup unsalted butter

1 cup brown sugar (packed)

1 cup chocolate chips

1/2 cup pecans, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Baking Sheet:

    • Line a 9×13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Arrange a single layer of Saltine crackers on the sheet, covering the entire bottom.

  • Make the Toffee:

    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Allow it to boil for about 3-4 minutes until it thickens slightly.

    • Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the Saltine crackers. Spread it out with a spatula to coat them evenly.

  • Bake the Toffee:

    • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the toffee-covered crackers for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling and the crackers’ edges begin to brown slightly.

  • Add the Chocolate:

    • Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the toffee. Let them melt for a few minutes, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.

  • Add the Pecans:

    • If using, sprinkle the chopped pecans over the melted chocolate while it’s still warm. Press them gently into the chocolate.

  • Cool and Set:

    • Let the toffee cool at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Then place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to set the toffee completely.

  • Break into Pieces:

    • Once set, break the toffee into pieces by hand or cut it into squares using a knife.

  • Serve:

    • Enjoy your sweet and salty Saltine Toffee!

Notes

Add different nuts: Swap the pecans for walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts for a different flavor.

Make it spicy: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the toffee for a sweet-spicy kick.

Use different chocolate: Milk chocolate or dark chocolate can be used instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Add sea salt: A sprinkle of sea salt on top adds extra flavor and enhances the sweet-salty balance.
