Saltine Toffee is the ultimate sweet and salty treat! With a buttery toffee base, a rich chocolate coating, and a crunchy topping of pecans, this easy-to-make dessert is perfect for any occasion. Simple, indulgent, and totally irresistible, it’s the perfect snack, party treat, or gift idea!
Saltine crackers (enough to cover the bottom of a baking sheet, about 30 crackers)
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar (packed)
1 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup pecans, chopped (optional)
Prepare the Baking Sheet:
Line a 9×13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Arrange a single layer of Saltine crackers on the sheet, covering the entire bottom.
Make the Toffee:
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Allow it to boil for about 3-4 minutes until it thickens slightly.
Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the Saltine crackers. Spread it out with a spatula to coat them evenly.
Bake the Toffee:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the toffee-covered crackers for 5-7 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling and the crackers’ edges begin to brown slightly.
Add the Chocolate:
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips over the toffee. Let them melt for a few minutes, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
Add the Pecans:
If using, sprinkle the chopped pecans over the melted chocolate while it’s still warm. Press them gently into the chocolate.
Cool and Set:
Let the toffee cool at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Then place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to set the toffee completely.
Break into Pieces:
Once set, break the toffee into pieces by hand or cut it into squares using a knife.
Serve:
Enjoy your sweet and salty Saltine Toffee!
Add different nuts: Swap the pecans for walnuts, almonds, or hazelnuts for a different flavor.
Make it spicy: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the toffee for a sweet-spicy kick.
Use different chocolate: Milk chocolate or dark chocolate can be used instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Add sea salt: A sprinkle of sea salt on top adds extra flavor and enhances the sweet-salty balance.
