Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy is a comforting and hearty dish combining juicy beef patties smothered in savory onion gravy. Perfect for a weeknight dinner or special occasion.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

1 ½ lbs ground beef

½ cup breadcrumbs

1 egg

¼ cup milk

½ tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

For the Onion Gravy:

2 onions, thinly sliced

2 tbsp all-purpose flour

2 cups beef broth

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp dried thyme

For Cooking:

Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Make the Hamburger Steaks: Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix until incorporated and shape into 4-6 patties.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 5-7 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove patties and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Onion Gravy: In the same skillet, add sliced onions and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 8-10 minutes until caramelized. Add flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  4. Make the Gravy: Slowly add beef broth to the onions while stirring to prevent lumps. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and dried thyme. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until gravy thickens.
  5. Combine the Patties and Gravy: Return hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  6. Serve: Serve the hamburger steaks with onions and gravy. Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables for a complete meal.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the gravy for some heat.

For a vegetarian version, substitute with mashed lentils or plant-based meat substitute.

If you prefer, bake the hamburger steaks at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes instead of frying.
