Juicy, lemon-and-oregano-marinated chicken wrapped in warm pita with crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, tangy tzatziki, and red onion for a fresh, flavorful Greek gyro experience.

Ingredients

1 lb chicken breast

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

4 pita breads

1 cup tzatziki sauce

1 cup chopped lettuce

½ cup diced tomatoes

¼ cup sliced red onion

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to make the marinade.
  2. Slice chicken breasts into thin strips or bite-sized pieces and coat well in the marinade. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.
  3. Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat and cook chicken until golden and cooked through, about 5–6 minutes per side, or until internal temperature reaches 165 °F (74 °C).
  4. Warm pita breads in a dry pan or oven until soft and pliable.
  5. Assemble each gyro with chicken, tzatziki, chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, and sliced red onion.
  6. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Chicken thighs can be used instead of breasts for juicier meat.

Marinate up to 8 hours for a deeper flavor.

For a spicy twist, add crushed red pepper to the marinade or a drizzle of spicy feta sauce.

Prepare toppings in advance to make assembly faster.

Keep components stored separately for best freshness.
