General Tso’s Chicken is a popular Chinese-American dish known for its crispy chicken pieces coated in a tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy sauce. This homemade version brings the perfect balance of flavors, making it a crowd-pleasing favorite.

Ingredients

4 chicken breasts (cubed)

1 cup all-purpose flour (or cornstarch)

1 tsp paprika

2 tsp garlic salt

1 1/4 cup sugar

1 cup water

1 cup white distilled vinegar

1 tsp salt

6 Tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp red chili pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour (or cornstarch), paprika, and garlic salt.
  2. Coat the cubed chicken breasts in the flour mixture until well-coated.
  3. Heat oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, fry the chicken pieces until golden brown and crispy. Remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside.
  4. In a separate saucepan, combine the sugar, water, white distilled vinegar, salt, soy sauce, and red chili pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves completely.
  5. Once the sauce has thickened slightly (about 5-7 minutes), add the fried chicken back into the pan. Toss the chicken in the sauce until fully coated and heated through.
  6. Serve the General Tso’s Chicken over steamed rice and garnish with green onions, if desired.

Notes

Spicy version: Increase the amount of red chili pepper flakes or add fresh chopped chilies for extra heat.

Vegetarian option: Replace chicken with tofu or seitan for a plant-based version.

Add vegetables: Feel free to toss in some steamed broccoli or bell peppers to add more texture and flavor to the dish.

Storage: Store leftover General Tso’s Chicken in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheating: Reheat the chicken in a pan over medium heat until crispy again, or in the microwave for a quicker option (though it may lose some of the crispiness).
