A deliciously indulgent dessert that layers caramelized Granny Smith apples, cake cubes, Cool Whip, and caramel sauce to create a rich and comforting treat, perfect for fall or any occasion.

Ingredients

3 Granny Smith apples

2 teaspoons lemon juice

Pinch of nutmeg

1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

4 tablespoons brown sugar

12 ounces pound cake (or any preferred cake)

8 ounces Cool Whip

6 tablespoons caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and chop the Granny Smith apples into small cubes.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the apples, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar. Cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  3. While the apples are cooling, slice the pound cake into small cubes.
  4. In serving glasses or bowls, layer the ingredients starting with a spoonful of the caramelized apples at the bottom.
  5. Add a layer of cake cubes on top of the apples.
  6. Follow with a layer of Cool Whip.
  7. Repeat the layers until the glass is full, finishing with a generous drizzle of caramel sauce on top.
  8. Garnish with additional cinnamon or whipped cream if desired.
  9. Serve immediately or chill for 30 minutes to an hour for better flavor melding.

Notes

For extra texture and flavor, add chopped pecans or walnuts as a topping.

Substitute Granny Smith apples with Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala for a sweeter version.

Try using angel food, sponge cake, or gingerbread cake for different flavor profiles.

For a vegan version, use dairy-free cake, coconut whipped cream, and vegan caramel sauce.

These trifles are best served fresh, but you can store the apple filling, cake, and caramel separately for up to 2 days.
