A gourmet twist on the classic Caprese salad, featuring tender grilled filet mignon topped with fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, basil, and a drizzle of aged balsamic vinegar. This elegant dish is perfect for any special occasion.

Ingredients

4 x 200 g beef filet mignon

Olive oil

200 g fresh Mozzarella di Bufala cheese at room temperature, sliced

1 large tomato, sliced

Aged balsamic vinegar

10 fresh basil leaves + extra for garnish

Sea salt flakes

Salt and pepper from the mill

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Grill:
    Preheat your grill to high heat.
  2. Prepare the Filet Mignon:
    Brush each filet mignon with a light coating of olive oil and season generously with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper.
  3. Grill the Steaks:
    Grill the filets for 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, adjusting the time for your desired doneness.
  4. Prepare the Toppings:
    Slice the fresh mozzarella di bufala and tomato into thin rounds.
  5. Rest the Steaks:
    Once the steaks are cooked to your liking, remove them from the grill and let them rest for a few minutes.
  6. Assemble the Dish:
    Layer the mozzarella slices on top of each steak, followed by a slice or two of tomato.
  7. Drizzle with Balsamic Vinegar:
    Drizzle aged balsamic vinegar over the steaks.
  8. Garnish:
    Sprinkle with fresh basil leaves and a pinch of sea salt flakes.
  9. Serve:
    Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

If you can’t find Mozzarella di Bufala, substitute with regular fresh mozzarella or burrata for a creamy alternative.

For a different flavor, try using heirloom tomatoes or adding a balsamic glaze instead of vinegar.

If you don’t have a grill, you can sear the filet mignon in a skillet and finish in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for a perfect steak.
