A luxurious twist on the classic sundae, Bananas Foster Split features caramelized bananas in a rich butter, brown sugar, and dark rum sauce, served over creamy vanilla ice cream for a quick yet elegant dessert.

Ingredients

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter

½ cup packed light-brown sugar

4 firm ripe bananas, peeled and halved lengthwise

¼ cup dark rum

Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Stir in brown sugar and cook 1–2 minutes until smooth and bubbling.
  3. Add bananas cut side down; cook 2 minutes until lightly caramelized, then turn and cook 1–2 minutes more.
  4. Carefully pour in dark rum; flambé if desired and safe, letting flames subside naturally.
  5. Cook 1 more minute until sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Serve bananas immediately over scoops of vanilla ice cream, spooning sauce over top.

Notes

Use firm, ripe bananas to hold their shape.

Substitute apple or orange juice for a non-alcoholic version.

Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for warm spice flavor.

Sauce can be made ahead and reheated before adding bananas.
